Semashko National Research Institute of Public Health26052023305052025Copyright © 2025,2025<p>The article presents the main stages of the scientific path of the outstanding Russian scientist, academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Mikhail Surenovich Balayan, his formation and growth at the M.P.Chumakov Research Institute of Polio and Viral Encephalitis on the basis of scientific publications, information from the mass media and numerous archival documents. The circle of his scientific interests is outlined, the results of research works on topical problems of medicine are described. The priority directions of his work are highlighted. The contribution of M.S. was noted. Balayan contributed to the development and strengthening of international cooperation of the M.P.Chumakov Research Institute of Polio and Viral Encephalitis with leading scientific organizations from around the world. Special attention is paid to M.S.Balayan's experiment with self-infection, his detection and description of a new nosological form of viral hepatitis (hepatitis E).
