By the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, transfusion had not yet become widespread in the USSR. In fact, the Great Patriotic War was the first serious test for the blood service. To meet the needs of the armed forces, a wide network of blood procurement was deployed with the involvement of a large number of civilians and military personnel of the rear units. In order to save money, various types of scrap blood began to be used in civil healthcare.
